This March (6th to 14th March 2021) you will get the LEGO Amelia Earhart Tribute (40450) when spending 100 dollars or more in the Lego shop. This set comes in the well-known classic gift with a purchase box with some great graphics and some good info on Amelia and her aviation endeavors.
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, in 1932. She set off from Newfoundland in a Lockheed Vega 5b intending to reach Paris, but bad weather forced her to land in Northern Ireland. Five years later, she disappeared during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe and was declared dead in 1939.
This promo was given to me for free by my affiliate partner Rakuten Advertising. My opinion on this set, however, is my own.
The Build & Features
LEGO Amelia Earhart Tribute set contains three number 1 bags, two number 2 bags, two loose pieces, 10(!) stickers, and a manual. The number 1 bags contain the plane and the number 2 ones, the stand.
As mentioned the plane resembles the Lockhead Vega 5B which Amelia used to try and cross the Atlantic in 1932. The build is a pretty good one and there are some nice techniques used. The landing gear is especially great! I’m not particularly fond of the propellors though as they look a bit like rowing spades.
The plane looks decent enough, but I do wish they used more bricks to round it out a bit better. The amazing amount of bricks used for the stand LEGO could’ve used for a slightly better plane. Said stand has too many in my opinion and is way too bulky. Though the overall set (plane and stand together) looks really good from afar. To me, that’s a bit of a missed opportunity, unfortunately.
The stand has a little plaque and Amelia’s minifigure can be put on the stand as well. It’s a basic minifigure though. The shirt has a good print though and the map is a nice touch. The helmet we’ve seen from Anakin Skywalker in the Naboo Starfighter Microfighter.
As a whole, the set looks awesome. It really does, but I do wish there was a bit more detail in the plane and a bit less stand. This being LEGO I’m sure many of you can find a more elegant way to make a display.
Also, as I will never be a big sticker guy, there are way too many (10) for a set this small. This set is good but could have been great.
