Lego Year of the Ox (40417) Review

Each year LEGO releases a Chinese Zodiac set and this time it’s the Year of the Ox. You can get this set when spending $85 or more between February 1st and February 14th. It’s not a big set, but it looks great, has a lot of moving parts, and great packaging.

This promo was given to me for free by my affiliate partner Rakuten Advertising. My opinion on this set, however, is my own.

The Build & Features

The build of the Year of the Ox set is pretty straight forward and reminded me of a BrickHeadz from time to time. Although the base of the set is a bit better and fleshed out.

The main thing that stands out in this set is that everything moves. The Ox’s feet, arms, tail, ears, and head all move separately. The big eyes of the Ox really give it a fun look.

The box design has largely been kept the same with its flap lid design. It’s one of those boxes that I don’t want to fold flat and store away.

Each year the Chinese Zodiac set includes a red packet with the year emblazoned onto it with golden ink. For those that don’t know, one of the main traditions during the Chinese New Year is the giving and receiving of red packets. Children and unmarried individuals typically receive these envelopes filled with money as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

My Thoughts

I think the Lego Year of the Ox packaging as well as the overall fun look and moving parts of the set are great and very collectible. It’s a really great set for a freebee, although I think giving these out when spending 50 dollars would have been a little fairer. I guess it will add to the collective value like this though.
